REA Unstack'd Meetup: Digging into Data Science at REA

This REA Unstack’d, join the Consumer Data Science team as we present our journey of building and deploying image and text processing machine learning models, as well as a panel where we share our potentially spicy opinions on what it means to be a high performing Data Science team.

In the first presentation we will share how we’ve taken an ML product idea from concept, through to production, and how this model suite has the potential to change the way we buy, sell, and rent properties. In this talk we will focus on the technical side of working with unstructured data, as well as how we build on ideas, face challenges we encounter, and ultimately how we see this product evolving in the future. The presentation will feature:

• Alex Cummaudo - Alex Cummaudo holds a PhD in Machine Learning Engineering, is an Industry Fellow of the Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute and is a machine learning engineer at REA Group. He has led research into computer vision models, and his aim is to enable software engineers to infuse AI into applications and democratise machine learning.
• Pasan Karunaratne - Pasan Karunaratne holds a PhD in machine learning from the University of Melbourne and has a wealth of industry experience ranging from pure machine learning modelling to enabling production-ready machine learning across multiple organisations in Australia. He is currently a Machine Learning Engineering Lead at REA Group.

Following this presentation (and some light refreshments and mingling), we will move into a panel discussion on “Building High Performance Data Science Teams”. Join our team of data scientists, machine learning engineers and delivery lead as they consider topics including; how to crack into the data science space? How does a team effectively and efficiently deliver value over time? And what exactly does “high performing” mean to us.
