Around the world, local news publishers are finally getting really serious about digital leading the way, and more than 300 have adopted the Washington Post's Arc Publishing platform. Arc is heavily leveraging React JS so that it is the key technology for publishers in Dallas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Boston and countless other cities.

Mike will talk about:

  • Why we're all doubling down on React
  • How we're going to rebuild all our digital products from scratch
  • How we're collaborating with Philadelphia and a major search platform to create an industry-wide common toolset for data-driven local news and information.

N.B.: I am a non-technical manager who can write algorithm logic, but haven't coded since I used Logo to move around a turtle on an Apple IIe. Please be gentle.

Mike Orren is the President of Belo Business Intelligence, where he leads marketing, analytics, product development, strategy, digital products, and sales infrastructure for A.H. Belo Corporation, publisher of The Dallas Morning News. Prior to that, he was President of Speakeasy, a content marketing agency joint-venture with A.H. Belo.

He founded Pegasus News, the largest single-market digital news pure-play in the US in 2005, eventually selling it to a publicly-traded broadcast company. PegNews pioneered content and advertising customization technology; content partnership; location-aware apps; and data-driven journalism — and put the first local news app into the Apple App Store.

Mike has served in senior roles at American Lawyer Media and D Magazine (where he launched the first city magazine website). As a consultant, he has helped Examiner, CBS Local, Cox and numerous other local publishers across all local media disciplines, including sales, circulation, editorial, product strategy, marketing, manufacturing, distribution and technology. His work has been recognized with awards from Editor & Publisher, The Dallas Press Club, the North Carolina Press Association and The Dallas Business Journal. He is a board member of The Local Media Consortium and The Agape Clinic.
