About us
Welcome to our Reading 19th Century Literature Meetup! This group is for all who are interested in reading the fiction and poetry of the nineteenth century (and perhaps a little of the early twentieth century). Over time we will read a large variety of authors including Romantic poets such as William Wordsworth and John Keats and Victorian poets such as Christina Rossetti and Gerard Manley Hopkins. Novelist will include Jane Austen, George Eliot and Thomas Hardy. Our meetings will be virtual and ideally participants should read the material beforehand. Meetings are fee. You should source the reading material yourself: much of it ought to be freely available online. During the meetings there will be some input on the material and its background and then discussion. Feel free to express your views or just take your time to reflect on what is being discussed. This group is perfect for book lovers who are interested in exploring the rich literary landscape of the 19th century. Whether you're a seasoned reader or just looking to discover a new favourite author, all literature enthusiasts are welcome to join us for lively conversation and a shared love of classic literature. Yeats’s Poetry II: the Political Years (1910-20)
·OnlineOnlineDuring the second decade of the twentieth century the poetry of W.B. Yeats (1865-1939) took on a more political turm in light of the First World War and also of the revolution (or ‘rising’) that occurred in Ireland in 1916. Yeats was also involved in the politics that came with his work as a promoter of literature and culture such as the controversy surrounding the building of a gallery to house the proposed gift of French Impressionists paintings to Dublin by Hugh Lane (1875-1915).
