Jane Austen’s Emma I; Austen as revolutionary story teller.
Details
Janes Austen (1775-1817) is still a widely-read novelist. What is little known, though, is that she was a revolutionary storyteller, using techniques that were a century a head of their times, particularly in her novel, Emma (1816). At this meeting we will be reading two chapters from Emma to explore this issue, chapters 15 (Book one, chapter 15) and chapter 43 (Book three, chapter 7). A full knowledge of the novel is not needed in order to take part.
There are 55 chapters in Emma. Some versions of Emma number them 1-55, others (following the original) divide them into three volumes, with 18, 18 and 19 chapters in each, respectively.
