Jane Austen’s Emma II; ‘The real evils of Emma’s situation’.
Details
Jane Austen's late great novel Emma (1816) is about the education of its heroine, about her self-discovery, about her move from lack of awareness to insight. The novel is therefore a comedy, with an ironic tone. The reader is an ironic observer and the reader’s viewpoint is contrasted with that of Emma. Emma grows in moral awareness as she grows in an awareness of her faults. At this meeting we will explore these issues in the novel. A full knowledge of the novel is not needed in order to take part.
