Join us as we discuss the first half of Kazantzakis' controversial novel! The Last Temptation of Christ tells the story of the life of the Biblical Jesus. However, Kazantzakis' Christ is very much a flawed human being who struggles with temptation, doubt, and despair as he grapples with his own divine nature. In this struggle, Kazantzakis argued, was to be found the true significance of the notion that he was 'God made man' - the divine made to wrestle with human frailty. However, the novel was roundly condemned by the Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches, and has been a focus of strident debate ever since its publication in 1955.

For this meeting, we will be discussing chapters 1-17 of the novel - roughly, its first half. If you don't have a physical copy of the book, you can find an epub of it at the following link:
