In a time where ambiguity is explicitly uncovered in every corner of our postmodern world, the question of whether there can be any solid ethical guidance to our lives seems more important than ever. In this work, Beauvoir takes the freedom inherent in our ambiguous existence head on, outlining several "ways of being" which she sees as increasingly optimal towards embracing the responsibilities of the freedom of existence. In short, she dares to argue for ethical responsibilities in the face of ambiguity. Along the way, the reader is introduced to many important themes of Existentialism and views of contemporary thinkers of the time.

Participants should read the entire reading before attending this in person meeting. I will be reading from this version here and a free copy can be found here. We will read the second part (Freedom and Liberation) of Chapter 3 to the end for this week (p. 84-173). ***We will meet in the Oyster Classroom for this week***
