TRIVIA NIGHT - Fun! Friendship! Fundraising!
Details
My dearest friends,
Long have we gathered together in the populated park and the hushed hotel lobby, crowding inside café and creating cute cohorts in the crannies of craft breweries, chattering into cortado and prattling into pilsner, the bindings of our books growing wrinkled, our manuscripts marred with marginalia pervading each pleated page, our tongues twisting to the tunes of theories both trite and triumphant, precepts both passé and pompous, and ideas both illuminative and inane.
It has now come time to put this wisdom to work.
With that, we introduce to you now NYC Philosophy and Psychology Readers Community's first PHIL & PSYCH TRIVIA NIGHT.
As we continue to diversify our approach to fostering community and friendly engagement within this already vibrant group, it is our hope that this will operate as the first of many events down the road meant to bring folks together to leisurely discuss philosophy & psychology and connect over some chummy competition.
Where: This event will take place at Liz's Book Bar in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. Their team has been kind enough to host our cadre of cheery contemplatives so please be as respectful of the space & staff as humanly possible and lavishly tip your bartenders. We ask that each attendee purchase at least one item from the café / bar to thank this delightful Book Bar for lending us their space for the evening. We have set the RSVP count at 45 based on the business's occupancy limit so we ask that you please only attend if you've secured a spot!
How: Depending on attendance, we will be dividing into groups of 3 to 4, providing a series of questions through which each group can either flex or fall, tallying the points, and rewarding the winners with high praise (and maybe a treat or two) that will last (at most) the remainder of the evening. Either come squaded-up or plan to squad-with-strangers - either way, we'll make sure everyone is comfortable and clicked-in with a crew.
What's the Catch?: In contrast to the majority of our typical meet-ups, this event will have a small fee (10 bucks!) associated with attendance and whatever is earned through "ticket sales" will directly contribute to the $5000 fundraising goal for 2026, with a small percentage being utilized to purchase modest prizes for the trivia winners. This said, we strive to be as transparent as possible so if there are any questions or concerns regarding the cost of this event, please don't hesitate to reach out to me (Hamp) directly and I'll be happy to help however I can.
Who: Lastly, this event is open to newcomers to philosophy & psychology as well as the hardened Hegelians, the fluent Freudian, and the seasoned Schopenhauerians. Our aim is to turn acquaintances into friends, not familiars into arch-rivals. With this, we hope to see thinkers of every stripe come together and laxly tackle the greatest questions posed throughout human history in a semi-structured, time-restricted, work-night-prohibited, but still wine-paired way. It'll be great. Or it won't, in which case, a dunce cap will be provided to place upon my head.
Again, please reach out to me with any questions in the meantime! We're excited to take this next step with the group alongside all who are able to attend.
Thanks,
Hamp
