Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit (week 1)

Join us for weekly discussions of G. W. F. Hegel's 1807 dialectical quest through consciousness and subjectivity to reason and absolute knowledge, The Phenomenology of Spirit.

Required reading for this meeting: Introduction and A. Consciousness: I. Sensory Certainty and II. Perception

(It is generally advised not to start with Hegel's preface, which we will likely read last.)

I'll be reading the 2018 Inwood translation, but feel free to read any translation or even the original German if you can read German. We plan to meet weekly and work our way through the whole book 20–30 pages at a time.

We'll be meeting at the 180 Maiden Lane Public Atrium on the ground floor of the building downtown.
