Our first reading will be The Hour of the Star (1977), a short novel by Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector. With just 96 pages, it is an intense and powerful book by one of Brazil’s most beloved authors.

The novel follows Macabéa, a young woman living on the margins of society in Rio de Janeiro. Through an unusual and sometimes meta narrative voice, Lispector reflects on language, authorship, poverty, invisibility, and what it means to tell someone else’s story.

The discussion will be held in English, but you’re welcome to read the book in any language.
We’ll meet at Backstory Bookshop (downstairs), and after the discussion we’ll continue the evening with a casual get-together over coffee or drinks nearby, for anyone who feels like staying.

New readers are welcome!
