Kate Chopin published The Awakening in 1899, and it has since been central to early feminism's focus on women's issues.
We'll follow a woman's rebellion against traditional gender roles through her main character, Edna Pontellier, and the tension between her increasingly unorthodox views on femininity and motherhood with the prevailing social attitudes of the turn-of-the-century American South.
