About us

Please RSVP (click "Attend") to receive the link to join the meeting - After you RSVP return back to the event listing and look on the right side of the page, just below the date. Under "Online event" it should now show a link to join.

We read history and/or non-fiction books each month. We meet on the 3rd Saturday of each month at 4pm PT in a Google Meet online meeting to discuss the books. New members are always welcome, even if you haven't read the book! The discussions are always interesting and lively, and sometimes range far beyond the book itself.  Our group has been meeting and discussing books for over 10 years now.  Anyone can suggest a book, and we vote on what we'll read.  If you're interested in history and non-fiction topics, you'll love this group!

    Situational Awareness, by Leopold Aschenbrenner
    (
    https://situational-awareness.ai/)

This month we are reading a free ebook (https://situational-awareness.ai/) which has emerged as one of the seminal frameworks for the discussion of AI safety. Parts of it are fairly technical, but you can skip over those and still get the main thrust of his argument.

Leopold Aschenbrenner’s Situational Awareness: The Decade Ahead is a prominent essay series that outlines a bold trajectory for artificial intelligence over the remainder of the 2020s. Formerly a researcher on OpenAI’s Superalignment team, Aschenbrenner argues that the rapid progression from early language models to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is not a distant speculation, but an imminent reality likely arriving by 2027. By extrapolating current trends in compute scale, algorithmic breakthroughs, and model capabilities, the paper frames the near future not merely as an incremental digital evolution, but as a historic industrial and geopolitical turning point.

For technical practitioners, the essay offers a structured framework centered on "Orders of Magnitude" (OOMs) of progress across hardware clusters, algorithmic efficiency, and agentic "unhobbling." Aschenbrenner asserts that reaching AGI is simply the first step; once AGI systems are deployed, hundreds of millions of automated AI researchers could compress a decade of AI advancement into a single year. This feedback loop - an "intelligence explosion" - leads rapidly to superintelligence. Crucially, he details severe engineering and operational hurdles, highlighting current lab security vulnerabilities against foreign state actors, the unsolved technical challenge of "superalignment" (controlling systems vastly smarter than humans), and the staggering physical infrastructure required, including trillion-dollar compute clusters demanding unprecedented power grid expansion.

For non-technical readers, Situational Awareness functions as a high-stakes geopolitical narrative reminiscent of the Manhattan Project. Aschenbrenner paints a vivid picture of a world where national security imperatives overtake private startups, leading to "The Project" - a government-led consolidation of AI development in a bid to outpace authoritarian rivals like China. Whether viewed as an accurate forecast or an over-extrapolated vision of Silicon Valley ethos, the ebook provides an accessible yet deeply technical foundation for the economic, safety, and societal disruptions awaiting us in the decade ahead.
