Graphical Exploratory Data Analysis in R

In this meeting we'll have Irina Kukuyeva and Ryan Rosario talking about how to use graphics for exploratory data analysis (EDA) in R. After shortly reviewing the philosophy of EDA, we will get hands-on experience of graphical EDA on a few real-world datasets. Here is a list of some of the graphical tools that will be used along the way:

• histograms (and overlaying sample and normal densities to it)
• boxplots and adding details
• scatterplots with different characters and options
• plotting time series
• geographic maps
• creating bubbleplots
• lattice graphics
• 3D graphics: scatterplot3d and plot3d
• formatting plots
• saving plots as PDFs, BMP, etc
• creating tables (to be used in LaTeX).

About the speakers:

• Irina Kukuyeva is a PhD student in the Department of Statistics at
  UCLA and a consultant with the Department's Statistical Consulting
  Center. She also works as a graduate student researcher at NASA's Jet
  Propulsion Laboratory.
• Ryan Rosario is a PhD student in the Department of Statistics at UCLA
  and a consultant with the Department's Statistical Consulting Center. He
  also works as a research statistician for The Search Agency, a web
  search optimization and marketing firm in Santa Monica. He has
  contributed to the Journal of Statistical Software.
