Statistics and Big Data at Google

Google lives on data. Search, Ads, YouTube, Maps, ... - they all live on data. I'll tell some stories about how Google uses data and statistics, how Google is always experimenting to make improvements (yes, this includes your searches), and how Google adapts statistical ideas to do things that have never been done before.
Bio:
Dr. Tim Hesterberg is a Senior Ads Quality Statistician at Google. He previously worked at Insightful (S-PLUS). He received his Ph.D. In Statistics from Stanford University under Brad Efron. He is co-author of Chihara and Hesterberg, Mathematical Statistics with Resampling and R, Wiley (2011). His interests include resampling, regularized regression, missing data, and sequential designs.
He is a Sierra Club leader, does water bottle rockets with kids, and has led trips of high school students setting up computer labs in Guatemala, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. http://www.timhesterberg.net

Venue: This meetup will be hosted by Google's Venice office (340 Main Street, Venice).

To access the event's location you will need to pass security. Only people with confirmed RSVP will be granted access. In addition the name you are using on meetup will need to match your name on your picture ID. So, in case you are using for example just your first name or some alias on meetup, you will need to change it to your full name.
Parking: There will be no parking provided, but you can park likely for free after 6pm in the streets nearby. Make sure about possible restrictions though (private parking lot / non-free / time limits etc).
