LA East R Users: Functional programming with purrr and Javascript for the useR

Details

Talk 1: Functional programming with purrr
Speaker: Daniel Chu (Ph.D. student in Health Behavior Research)

purrr (three r's) is a powerful functional programming toolkit to produce more concise and "safer" code. It includes functions to manipulate lists, to map functions across vectors (similar to the base R apply functions but "safer") and vice versa, and to modify functions (via higher-order functions). These tools are helpful for all types of R users and can save a lot of time in creating as well as running a workflow.

Talk 2: JavaScript for the R Programmer
Speaker: Alan Dipert (Software engineer on the Shiny team at RStudio)

Because of Shiny and htmlwidgets, JavaScript is an integral part of the R ecosystem. In my talk I'll introduce the JavaScript language and the tools that surround it from an R perspective. I'll also demonstrate interfacing JavaScript with R and provide resources for learning more.
