- S3/S4 Objects
by Oliver Will
Abstract:
My talk will cover the properties, uses and differences between S3 and S4 objects. Typically one reads that R is an object oriented programming language, but I have wondered for a long time what does this mean exactly. My most recent project at work has required a larger and higher quality R code base than I typically make and made heavy use of the igraph, based on S3, and graph, based on S4, packages. I had to confront the technical aspects of both object types and I will share with you what I learned. Warning: Im having difficulties completely gearing this to beginning or advanced users. It will probably be too advanced for beginners and too simple for experts.

- DataFest 2012
by Rob Gould
Abstract:
DataFest is a new annual student competition at UCLA in which teams of students have 48 hours to find meaning in a complex data set. As a means of drumming up interest for DataFest 2012, student participants from 2011 will give brief presentations of their attempts to give meaningful advice to the LAPD after reviewing a data set with all crimes reported in the last 5 years.
