### Join us for another opportunity for a day out with a difference!
We have had great feedback from our previous visits that we thought we would include it again in 2025. This time we have paired it with a visit to Burgh House in Hampstead Village and if you have visited Highgate and done the tour before and want to explore more then this is an option for you too….read on to find out more!
Highgate is historic and unique! You can immerse yourself in the special atmosphere of this Victorian cemetery full of stunning gothic architecture as you hear about its history and its permanent residents. With its sinuous paths winding up a steep wooded hill and ivy-clad monuments, Highgate Cemetery is a secluded funerary landscape at its most evocative.
The stories of Highgate Cemetery are as diverse as the people buried here. Some of them are well-known, some are being rediscovered, and others will remain untold. They can give us fascinating insights into the lives and habits of our predecessors, and food for thought about how we live our own lives. As well as a guided tour of Gothic wonder that is Highgate West Cemetery which includes more recent burials including George Michael, there is time to explore Highgate East, home to illustrious figures of the 19th century as well as eminent people from our own time, including Karl Marx and Malcolm McLaren.
Arriving around 11.30, our first port of call is Burgh House a Grade I listed Queen Anne house built in 1704 and situated in the heart of Hampstead Village. It was a private residence for most of its life and its last residents moved out in 1937. After 10 years of being unoccupied, it was transformed into a community centre by Hampstead Borough Council. In 1979, local residents saved the house, and it was leased to the newly formed charity, the Burgh House Trust, as a space for the local community. Burgh House is an accredited museum containing a fascinating collection of objects, artworks, documents, textiles, and furniture relating to the history of the House, the local area, and its extraordinary residents. The Trust have acquired almost 5,000 objects thanks to many generous donations from the public, local institutions, and artists.
The short transfer to Highgate follows, with options of taking the fascinating guided tour of the West side, with free time to explore the East side after; or free time for a self guided tour of both East and West accompanied by the Highgate plan. Either option should ensure you are in for a fascinating day!
