**About Phil Barber:**
Phil Barber has spent 21 years at The Press Democrat. For most of that time, he was a sports reporter and columnist. Barber joined the PD’s news team early in the pandemic and wound up embracing the new challenge. His **investigative subjects** have included the history of forced sterilizations at the Sonoma State Home institution, and a Subway franchisee who owned 14 Bay Area restaurants and stole at least $500,000 in wages from his employees. He first profiled the
**Tim LeFever/Ken Mattson** real estate empire in March 2023. Though at that point the duo were more mysterious than nefarious, Barber’s reporting put him in prime position to break recent news on the partnership’s unfolding downfall. He is a native of the Sacramento Valley, a UCLA graduate and father of four adult daughters.
