Reading books in silence — Make New Friends in Lisbon

A continuation of long-awaited Realy Make Friends MeetUps →︎ now in Lisbon 🎉

This one's simple. Bring a book. Find us in the park. Read in silence with a small group of humans who love to read, but either don't have the time for it, or would love company. Then, if you feel like it, stick around for a connection cards game and meet the people you've been reading next to.

📍 Where: Jardim Botânico de Lisboa
🎟️ Event fee: FREE
🎟️ Entry to the park is free until 12.30 — when you arrive at the gate, just say you'd like a free ticket to enter the park.

How it works
When you arrive, find the organizer, say a quick hi to the group, settle in, and open your book. We read together in silence for at least 1 hour — no phones, no small talk, just you and the page.

After about 1-1.5 hours of reading, we'll bring out our connection cards for anyone who wants to stay. Meaningful, playful, surprising questions designed to take you past "so, what do you do?" — for another hour or so.

If you just came to read, that's perfect. You can leave after the silent part and no one will think twice. If you came to read and meet people, even better — stay for the cards.

FAQ
– What kind of book should I bring?
Whatever you're actually reading. Fiction, non-fiction, poetry, a re-read of something you love. No judgment, no required reading list. WE DO NOT PROVIDE BOOKS.
– Can I bring a friend?
Yes, but you don't need to. Solo readers are the heart of this.
– What if I don't want to do the cards part?
Totally fine. The reading hour and the cards hour are two separate things — leave whenever feels right.
– Is this about dating?
No. It’s about making friends. If you walk out with a best friend, a new running partner, or someone to grab coffee with, we’ve done our job.
– Do I need to bring anything else?
A blanket or something to sit on if you'd rather be on the grass. Water. That's it.

Seats (and patches of grass) are limited.
Come read. Stay if you want. Either way, you'll leave a little quieter inside.

Como funciona
Quando chegares, procura o organizador, cumprimenta o grupo, instala-te e abre o teu livro. Lemos juntos em silêncio durante pelo menos 1 hora — sem telemóveis, sem conversa de circunstância, só tu e a página.

Depois de cerca de 1 a 1,5 horas de leitura, vamos trazer as nossas cartas de conexão para quem quiser ficar. Perguntas significativas, divertidas e surpreendentes, pensadas para te levar para além do "então, o que é que fazes?" — durante mais ou menos outra hora.

Se vieste só para ler, perfeito. Podes ir embora depois da parte silenciosa e ninguém vai estranhar. Se vieste para ler e conhecer pessoas, ainda melhor — fica para as cartas.

FAQ
– Que tipo de livro devo trazer?
O que estiveres mesmo a ler. Ficção, não-ficção, poesia, uma releitura de algo que adoras. Sem julgamentos, sem lista de leitura obrigatória. NÃO FORNECEMOS LIVROS.
– Posso trazer um amigo?
Sim, mas não precisas. Os leitores solo são o coração deste evento.
– E se eu não quiser participar na parte das cartas?
Sem problema. A hora de leitura e a hora das cartas são duas coisas separadas — sai quando te apetecer.
– Isto é sobre encontros amorosos?
Não. Isto é sobre fazer amigos. Se saíres com um melhor amigo, um novo parceiro de corrida, ou alguém para ir tomar um café, cumprimos o nosso papel.
– Preciso de trazer mais alguma coisa?
Uma manta ou algo para te sentares, se preferires ficar na relva. Água. É só isso.
Os lugares (e os cantinhos de relva) são limitados.
Vem ler. Fica se quiseres. De qualquer forma, vais sair um pouco mais calmo por dentro.
