### The DSA and the Democratic Party: Disruption, Realignment, or Both?
The Democratic Socialists of America has gone from a fringe organization of a few thousand members to a genuine force in American electoral politics in roughly a decade. DSA-affiliated candidates have won primaries in New York, Colorado, and Pennsylvania, with Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City serving as perhaps their most prominent win to date. DSA membership has grown from several thousand people a decade ago to more than 100,000, while members and endorsed candidates have gained ground in municipal elections across the country. Is the DSA's influence on the Democratic Party real and durable, and is it a healthy development for American democracy? What does it mean for democratic health when an organized ideological caucus pulls a major party leftward through primary challenges? Is this how party realignment is supposed to work, or does it risk making the broader party uncompetitive in general elections?
