Is Patriotism Problematic? Patriotism is polarizing. Proponents posit it as an unquestioned virtue, a marker of good citizenship and shared belonging. Opponents frame it as a negative force that is just a cover for nationalism that demands uncritical loyalty, and is often wielded to justify exclusion and aggression. American patriotism, in particular, is complicated because the country is defined partly as an idea or set of principles, not just a place. Does that make American patriotism more prone to sliding into nationalism (since principles claim universal relevance), or does it give our version of patriotism a moral backbone that pure ethnic, or territorial, nationalism lacks?
