- Finances and Divorce in Massachusetts – Vesta's Lexington/ Winchester, MA HubLink visible for attendees
Join our confidential event on navigating the financial aspects of divorce in Massachusetts, with a focus on assets, debts, and the family home.
About this Event:
Join the Lexington/ Winchester, MA Hub for a confidential and supportive event focused on some of the most critical — and often overwhelming — financial aspects of divorce: dividing assets, managing debt, and making informed decisions about the family home.
Massachusetts follows an equitable distribution model, which means the division of property is based on what’s fair, not necessarily equal. This includes consideration of all assets — even those acquired before the marriage or inherited — as Massachusetts does not automatically exclude separate property from division. The length of the marriage is also a key factor in determining how assets, debts, and even decisions about the home are approached.
Whether you're contemplating divorce, preparing for it, or actively going through the process, this event will offer practical tools, expert insights, and clear next steps to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.
Topics we’ll cover include:
- What does “equitable division” really mean in Massachusetts?
- Separate vs. marital property — what’s included and how it’s handled
- How the length of your marriage impacts financial decisions and outcomes
- Identifying and valuing different types of marital assets
- Managing and dividing debt fairly and strategically
- Should you keep the house, sell it, or refinance? Key considerations
- Traditional and complex retirement assets, including the QDRO process
- Creating a realistic post-divorce budget and savings plan
- Steps to rebuild financial stability and long-term independence
