Book Club: Still Life by Sarah Winman

For July we're reading Still Life Still Life by Sarah Winman. It's a 2021 novel set in London and in Tuscany.

As Allied troops advance and bombs fall around deserted villages, a young English soldier, Ulysses Temper, finds himself in the wine cellar of a deserted villa. There, he has a chance encounter with Evelyn Skinner, a middle-aged art historian who has come to Italy to salvage paintings from the ruins and recall long-forgotten memories of her own youth.

As Ulysses returns home to London, reimmersing himself in a circle of eccentric characters at his local pub, he harbours memories of his time in Italy. And when he receives an unexpected inheritance, he simply has to return to the Tuscan hills.

This novel was a Sunday Times bestseller, a BBC "Between the Covers" pick and a BBC Radio 4 "Book at Bedtime" selection. It's won numerous other literary awards.
