Finding Beauty in Hardship—An Afternoon with Chopin

Details

For our next Refined Minds session, we’ll journey into the world of Frédéric Chopin—a composer whose life was marked by hardship and longing, yet whose music remains a testament to resilience and beauty.

Chopin’s works were shaped by personal struggles, exile, and fragile health, but from this adversity, he crafted some of the most breathtakingly expressive music ever written.
This afternoon, we’ll listen together to three of some of his most beloved pieces:

  • Waltz Op. 64 No. 2
  • Prelude Op. 28 No. 24
  • Nocturne Op. 48 No. 1

I'll start with a brief presentation of Chopin’s life and the emotional world behind his music.
As we listen to his music, let’s consider:

  • How does suffering give rise to beauty?
  • What is it about Chopin’s melodies that move us so deeply, even centuries later?
  • How can music offer comfort and meaning in the face of adversity?

Whether you’re a long-time fan or discovering Chopin for the first time, come ready to listen, reflect, and share your thoughts in a welcoming, thoughtful discussion.

The meeting will be held in Vancouver Public Library's Central Branch - Level 6, North (690) Meeting Room. Please message me or ask the librarian if you have trouble locating the room.
