What is Jul? Jul (pronounced yule) was originally a pagan holiday dating back to the 5th century (perhaps even longer) that marks the return of the sun after the Winter Solstice and lasts for the following 12 days. This festival is still widely celebrated throughout Scandinavia and Northern Europe.

What's In Store: This will be an intimate gathering for the Wyrd Witch Community. We'll build a glorious Julbord (a Christmas table) and kick off our afternoon off with food. During our meal, Ida will offer a lecture on traditional Jul practices of old and new alike and share about her recent trip to Sweden and her experience studying Trolldom in the dark season.

Once our bellies are full, we'll co-create a ritual in honor of the sun's return. Post ritual we'll have ample time to relax and connect while sipping on seasonal drinks. The shop next door will be opened up as extra lounge space and a chance to do any local seasonal shopping you may have on your list. Our gathering is early in the day to accommodate those of you that have evening traditions on this holy day.

Food Ideas: Ida will bring a traditional main dish known as Julskinka (a very important and special Christmas ham), Glögg (a spiced warming winter drink) as well as the mandatory Risalamande (rice pudding with cherry sauce and one hidden whole almond that will bring the bearer abundance and wealth the coming year).

Please do your best to research 'traditonal Julbord food and recipes'. If you're not a kitchen witch, there are plenty of simple cold items and beverages you could contribute. Generally the feast is broken down into at least 3 courses that include cold foods, warm foods, then followed by baked goods and desserts.

Feel free to reach out if you're not sure what to bring. I know for certain that we Wyrd Witches will put on a damn good spread!
