The Reno Chamber Orchestra [RCO] is pleased to announce that it will present the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine Kiev [NSOUK] live in concert at the Pioneer Center for the Arts in Reno, Nevada on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 7:30 pm.

The orchestra will be conducted by its “conductor laureate” none other than our very own RCO music director and conductor, Theodore Kuchar. This is one of forty three concerts being performed by the NSOUK in their 2017 North American tour.

Formed by the Council of Ministers of Ukraine in November of 1918, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine is considered to be one of the finest symphony orchestras in Eastern Europe. Since 1993, the NSOUK has released more than 100 recordings which include both Ukrainian and international repertoires. Most of these recordings have received the highest international acclaim in which the orchestra has been led by Theodore Kuchar. In 1994, the Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC) rated NSOU’s recording of Boris Lyatoshynsky’s Symphonies No. 2 and No. 3 as “The Best Recording of the Year.” The CD of Silvestrov’s Requiem for Larissa was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005. The CD of Bloch and Lees’ Violin Concertos was nominated for a Grammy Award four years later.

The program featured in the Reno performance will be music of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Khachaturian and Beethoven. The main works include a performance of the Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 will round out the program. Composed in 1888, the emotionally charged and electrifying symphony has become a staple of the symphonic canon exemplifying the concept put forth by the composer of “ultimate victory through strife.” Performances of this monumental work were very popular throughout and following World War II. One of the most notable performances was by the Leningrad Radio Symphony Orchestra during the Siege of Leningrad. City leaders had ordered the orchestra to continue its performances to keep the spirits high in the city. On the night of October 20, 1941 they played Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 at the city’s Philharmonic Hall and it was broadcast live to London. As the second movement began, bombs started to fall nearby, but the orchestra continued playing until the final note. Lukáš Vondráček will be the soloist in the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor”. Vondráček is 2016 First Prize winner of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth International Competition and has appeared in Reno with the RCO in the recent past. He has gone on to spectacular debuts in Boston, London, Philadelphia, and around the world.
