RTA did this intermediate event a few years ago and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The trip provides members with an opportunity to explore deep in the backcountry while staying in a nice WARM hut at the end of the day's activities. The hut has been reserved both nights exclusively for RTA members and their guests.
Apologies for the Sunday -Tuesday time frame but that's all that was available this winter as the Sierra huts are extremely popular. Availability was gone within a few minutes of being released, and this after summer hut work parties were given priority bookings weeks ago. It is what it is but still this promises to be an excellent adventure and is definitely worth using vacation time or PTO for this popular event!
PLEASE NOTE: If you snore AT ALL, please take a pass on this event (based on prior experience). Sleeping is in an open area, so ear plugs are still recommended!
Ludlow Hut is located near Lost Corner Mountain on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, 5.2 miles beyond the Rubicon-McKinney trailhead. Expect approximately 1,100′ of elevation gain. The route follows a road along McKinney Creek to Miller Lake, to Richardson Lakes, and the hut at 7,400′.
We will car-pool from Gold Ranch in Verdi to T/H parking, the crux of the route!!!
The second day, everyone's free to explore the area. There are good backcountry ski runs down the north side of Lost Corner Mountain and south face of Sourdough Hill and day trips to either Richardson Lake, Lost Lake, Northern Desolation Wilderness, or climbing Lost Corner Mountain.
ALL winter gear normally taken for a winter overnight back-pack trip is needed, except for your tent. An air mattress and 3-season sleeping bag are OK instead of a heavier winter bag. Snowshoes, ski's, split-boards, your choice.
The hut has a main room with a wood-burning stove, tables, and a kitchen area. An upstairs sleeping loft accommodates up to 15 though we limit this event to 12 to provide more elbow room!
All participants need to bring their own stove & fuel, pot, cup, etc.
The hut usually has solar for limited lighting so if anyone has a lantern they wish to bring, please do, otherwise it's headlamps for illumination. A two-story outhouse is 100′ southeast of the hut, BYO T/P.
