 Little Round Top / Showers & Meiss Lake 3-Day / 2-Night

Details

Believe it or not, after four rescheduling's, this event is finally going to happen! Storms this coming week will add copious quantities of snow, and hopefully it won't all melt by the 18th. It's time to GIT-R-DONE!

Being deep in the backcountry in winter with the opportunity to spend the night on a Sierra summit, just doesn't get any better than this, and based on past participants comments, this is hands down, the best intermediate/advanced winter back-country event offered by Reno-Tahoe Adventures (my personal favorite).

With cooperative weather, (last year we were literally blown off the ridge, but it was still fun!) the views in every direction en-route and from the summit are nothing short of spectacular (see above).

This 3-day / 2-night round-trip, beginning at Carson Pass, traverses along a broad undulating ridge to the summit of Little Round Top (LRT) where we spend the first night. The second day involves a 180° looping descent to Showers Lake then onto Meiss Lake for a second night with a casual return to Carson Pass the following day.

Though this route is non-technical and avoids or minimizes exposure to avy terrain, it is exposed to potential high winds. Participants should be in excellent physical condition and have some basic winter back-country travel and camping experience. Ridge top traverse to LRT is apprx. 5 miles & 1,200’ of gain. The return is apprx. 6 miles and 400' of gain spread over two days.

A recommended guideline for appropriate & necessary winter gear & clothing for this outing is available for review.

Snowshoes, ski’s or split-boards, your preference, and though most participants use snowshoes, this is an excellent route for skiers. A 4-season or high-quality 3+ season tent and winter sleeping bag are necessary due to the summit exposure on LRT. Those items along with 4-season ground pads, snowshoes & poles, winter boots, gaiters, stoves, shovels, packs, etc. can be rented from Nevada Adventure Rentals www.nevadaadventurerentals.com. Additionally, a few extra items of gear & clothing to lend out are also available on a first come first serve basis.

As with all our adventures, this trip is subject to rescheduling based on snow-pack conditions and the weather forecast, short of a blizzard we still usually go. (Jan. 31st was a blizzard!!!)

Everyone will also need to sign off on the RTA Liability Waiver.
