THIS EVENT IS THE OVERNIGHT PORTION OF RTA's POPULAR "Intro to Winter Camping" CLASS.

If you enjoy backpacking and camping but have never tried it in winter, this event will provide the knowledge, skills and some tried and true techniques to allow for an enjoyable and comfortable night in the winter wilderness. It’s the 3 “B’s” of camping, No Bugs, No Bears (usually) and No-Body else around! This introductory class has been well attended the past seven years and is an excellent primer for upcoming RTA overnight events.

On THURSDAY DECEMBER 18th at 5:45pm we are offering an informal 2-hour seminar to be held at the Sierra Canyon Lodge in Somersett (1798 Del Webb Pkwy West, Reno, NV 89523). Please RSVP ASAP as class size is limited.

The seminar is highly recommended if one hasn't winter camped before. Appropriate winter gear and clothing will be reviewed, what works and what doesn't, pre-trip planning, and guidance on safe winter back-country travel. Additionally, anyone needing to acquire items will have time prior to heading into the backcountry. In addition to handouts, bottled water and refreshments will be provided fireside.

Anyone who is short items can let us know and we may have an extra item for use. Additionally, Nevada Adventure Rentals in Reno www.nevadaadventurerentals.com has a complete line of winter gear for rent including tents, bags, etc. Also, GearHut in Reno https://www.gearhutreno.com/ has used winter gear for sale at great prices.

Whether a novice or experienced winter camper this trip offers something for everyone. Depending on the snowpack, forecast, and group size we will head to either Forestdale Creek (extremely scenic) near Carson Pass, a hidden spot near the Mt. Rose Hwy summit, or the Blackwood Creek Valley. None of these areas traverse any avalanche zones and all the approaches are 2 miles or less.

Snowshoes are the primary mode of travel but ski's or split-boards are fine.

Also, everyone will need to sign off on the RTA Liability Waiver.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
