Lassen Peak
Details
The previous 6 trips RTA has made to Lassen Peak have all been filled with great scenery, great friends, plenty of laughter, and a rewarding climb to the summit. Looking forward to the same this year.
This exceptional advanced 3-day trip involves a remote back-country approach via one of three routes (North, East, or South) to the peak followed by an ascent of either the Southeast Ridge or Southwest Face (a bit steeper) depending on snow-pack conditions and participants experience. Total round-trip distance to summit and back is apprx. 12 miles with 3,450' of total gain. The summit climb is apprx, 2,000'.
This is an excellent event to gain mountaineering experience, especially if one plans on climbing Mt. Shasta.
If snow conditions are favorable, a ski or glissade descent of Mr. Toads Wild Ride (2,000') is usually a highlight of the trip.
Snowshoes, skis, or split-boards w/skins will work for the approach. Although technically not a "winter" climb, experience with winter back-country travel and camping is recommended. For the climb of the peak an ice axe & micro-spikes or crampons are required.
An extra day has been added this year so basic mountaineering skills including use of ice-ax and crampons / micro-spikes can be learned and practiced before the climb. An early alpine start for the summit this year will provide for better snow-pack conditions!
This trip is also open to those who wish to experience Lassen's backcountry but would prefer not to climb the peak.
A basic winter gear list is available for the asking as well as some extra gear / clothing for use. Also, for those missing an item or two of gear, a complete line of winter gear (4-season tents, bags, ice axes, etc.) is available from Nevada Adventure Rentals in Reno www.nevadaadventurerentals.com.
As usual this trip is subject to rescheduling depending on snow-pack conditions, avy, weather forecast, and road conditions.
Everyone will need to sign off on the RTA Liability Form at the departure meeting site or the trailhead.
ALSO, EVERYONE WILL NEED TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE PARK ENTRANCE FEE. IT IS $30 / VEHICLE SO EVERYONES COST WILL BE SET ONCE A FINAL TALLY OF PARTICIPANTS AND VEHICLES IS MADE (USUALLY $5 - $10 / PERSON)
