Buckeye Hot Springs
Details
Well, here's something different from RTA !!!!!!!............LOL
Instead of another butt freezing alpine climb how about spending a relaxing afternoon in a backcountry natural hot spring while sipping a hot chocolate or hot toddy and enjoying snow-covered views of the wilderness.
The Buckeye Hot Springs, located in the foothills above Bridgeport, are unique in that there are two upper-level pools with great views and the main rock-lined pools which are located in Buckeye Creek and fed by a cascading waterfall of heated mineral water.
Between the 6 total tubs, Buckeye Hot Springs fits 30+ people. This includes the 2 upper pools and all creekside pools.
Temperature: Varies, but about 100°F+ / 38°c+ in the tubs & 140°F / 60°c at the source. The creek pools drop in temperature further downstream from the waterfall source.
A dirt road accesses a parking lot and portable outhouse located above Buckeye Creek. One must then descend to the upper pools and / or to the creek bottom.
THE ACCESS ROAD IS NOT MAINTAINED SO ROAD SNOW CONDITIONS MAY FORCE A CANCELLATION.
ALSO, BUCKEYE HOT SPRINGS IS CLOTHING OPTIONAL. However, I am asking our attendee's to please honor modesty and wear some swimwear. But please keep in mind that locals may show up in their birthday suits so also consider this if you are not comfortable around a bunch of naked strangers before signing up................
The plan is to bring some large tarps to place on the snow near the upper pools and at creek level to allow for disrobing and dressing. Sandals or other footwear is recommended as these are natural pools with rock/sand/pebble bottoms. The pools are appx. 18"-24" deep and temps are cooler in the pools farther downstream.
Boots and ski poles are recommended for the descent, especially if there is substantial snow.
Car-pools with AWD are needed................any volunteers??? All riders please contribute to the drivers for gas.
At the end of the afternoon, the option to have dinner in Bridgeport or back in Reno at Los Compadres Mexican restaurant located next to Beer NV, is open to discussion.
Again, everyone will need to sign off on the RTA Liability Waiver. And forgive me for mentioning this, but please be considerate of others regarding any alcohol intake.
