Barker Pass, Ward Creek, Alpine Meadows Ride

Details

This week we have a ride that is relatively new, we have done as a club twice before. This time we will begin at the pickleball courts that are on the left immediately after you turn up Olympic Valley Road from Highway 89 in Truckee. There are bathroom facilities there.

We start this ride by going down Olympic Valley Road and taking the bike path alongside Hwy89 toward Tahoe City. We then follow River Road South to Alpine Meadows Road where we turn right and climb up towards the ski resort. We continue on River road towards lake Tahoe and turn South on West Lake Boulevard We then continue South to Ward Creek Road where we pursue another climb up to the top of Ward Creek road with a little loop at the top. Then we again turn down West Lake Boulevard to Barker Pass Road where we climb out to Barker Pass at elevation of 7782 feet.

We are informed by local riders that there is presently a gate on Barker pass road that we will walk around and that near the top there may still be some snow on the road, at which point we will stop regroup and drink our water bottles before descending. We must remember the gate's presence while we descend.

On the return we can stop at Tahoe House Bakery on West Lake Boulevard near the intersection with River Road.

It is possible for riders to skip one or two of the climbs to shorten the ride.
