Understanding and Minimizing Bias in User Research

Details

Join us for an event about bias: How can we, as researchers, better understand and recognize bias? How can we minimize bias in our designs and research? This event will start with a short presentation, followed by a panel discussion with three experts in bias and design research.

OUR PANELISTS:

Erica Frantz, PhD
An experimental social psychologist, Erica received her PhD from Purdue University in 2014. After spending some years as a college professor, she managed to flee the madness of academia for the more fulfilling world of human-centered design research, working with what is now Idean/Capgemini Invent. However, her heart is still very closely aligned to her academic research interests: how people think about themselves, others, and their social world. One component of this broad field is the realm of stereotyping and prejudice, which is what she will be discussing today.

Marion Tanis
Anthropologist, semiotician, and experience researcher working on behalf of the human condition within the UX research team at Audible, Inc. He likes to figure out what people want/need at a personal, cultural, and generational level — and then give it to them in the most delightful and natural way possible. Marion studied cultural anthropology and gender at Kennesaw State University and went on to study media & communications in graduate school at UT Austin.

David Dylan Thomas
Author of the book Design for Cognitive Bias from A Book Apart, serves as Content Strategy Advocate at Think Company and is the creator and host of the Cognitive Bias Podcast. He has developed digital strategies for major clients in entertainment, healthcare, publishing, finance, and retail. A co-organizer of Content Strategy Philly, he previously consulted at the Corzo Center for the Creative Economy and is the creator, director, and co-producer of Developing Philly, a web series about the rise of the Philadelphia tech community. He has given standing-room-only presentations at TEDNYC, SXSW Interactive, Confab, LavaCon, UX Copenhagen, Artifact, and the Wharton Web Conference on content strategy and emerging content trends.
