An unholy union? Let’s talk about forced marriage, and comics!

Details

Hannah loves comics and hates injustice. Join us and find out how comics spark discussions about human rights.

In 2023, approximately 800 people asked the UK Forced Marriage Unit for advice. Forced marriages occur when one or both spouses do not or cannot (legally) consent to marriage, or their ‘consent’ has been pressured or coerced. In addition to criminalising the practice and creating civil legal remedies, the Government, anti-forced marriage organisations, researchers and affected communities have highlighted the importance of (legal) education to prevent and end the practice.

Responding to their call for (better) forced marriage education, Hannah and her team created the comic I Choose: Let’s Talk About Forced Marriage as a tool to educate people about the practice and equip them to raise awareness and support those at risk or already experience it (AHRC AH/X004325/1).

In this talk, we will use the comic to discuss different types, causes, and consequences of forced marriage, and explore opportunities for resistance and intervention.
