User research with older people: lessons from niche groups

Details

Join us for the second in a two-part summer event focussing on research with niche groups. This September we will focus on user research with older people. If you’re interested, our July event looked at user research with kids.

TIMINGS & JOINING

Talks are 20 mins each, with 5 mins for questions, followed by a panel discussion with questions curated from you, our attendees.

--

As user researchers, we venture into the worlds of our participants. Contexts where there are different norms, values and goals. Places where people behave and interact differently from us. And research with older people is no exception.

In this event, you will learn from speakers' experiences about doing research with highly diverse participants and their contexts and the specifics of working with/for older people.

Join us to learn about:

  • effective research practice with older people,
  • adapting and adjusting research for diverse participants,
  • practical and tangible takeaways for user research with any demographic.

Carrying out user research with silver surfers: challenges and outcomes
Vayia will discuss the potential challenges of running online moderated usability sessions with older populations in this talk. She will also share things to consider to make this type of research session enjoyable and productive.

In 2000, Vayia decided to abandon archaeology and pursue a career in web development instead. She worked in the digital content profession since then. Passionate about making websites a great experience for all users, she has been running user research in her role as an Accessibility and Usability Consultant at AbilityNet.

She has also facilitated ten-year antenatal preparation sessions for the National Childbirth Trust. These in-person and online sessions reinforced her belief that by respecting differences and by offering options, people with and without disabilities can contribute towards and benefit from equitable experiences

Practical Tips for Doing Research with Older People
This talk will cover practical tips for doing research with older people, older people with adult social care needs and older people whose English is a second language.

Throughout my 12-year research career, I’ve worked on projects within academia, local authorities and charities with older people. The projects I’ll be referring to in this talk are some projects I've completed with older people as participants. These projects have spanned my PhD studies where I explored health topics with a small group of first-generation Polish community members, evaluated a Winter Wellness service for a local authority, talked about data analytics with older people that have used Adult Social Care services and evaluated a website with people with arthritis for an arthritis charity.

The tips will cover in-person and online qualitative research.
