Scaling User Research

Details

Join us virtually for an evening this autumn to get inspired and energised on scaling user research.

Yes, this is always a hot topic! Join our two key speakers and two lightning talks to learn how empowering our colleagues and democratising user research can build credibility and strengthen Research teams and ultimately scale user research.

We will also have two lightning talks on this theme - currently TBC. Reach out to Swetha Sethu-Jones if you're interested in giving a lightning talk.

MAIN TALKS (20mins each + a Q&A)

Patrick Sansom, Senior User Researcher, DEFRA
Your user needs are crap! (And so were mine.) Ten ways to improve user needs…
User needs are a typical output from research, but for various reasons they are often ineffectively written. Having recently reviewed 250+ needs from across 10 projects, Patrick has identified common mistakes with them (which he has also made in the past) and will suggest potential solutions. Oh, and we’ll play a fun game of ‘Bad User Needs Bingo!’ at the end as well.

Patrick is a Senior Strategic User Researcher at DEFRA, and is the Founder of UX Camp Brighton.

Navdeep Athwal PhD, Head of UX, Citigroup
Scaling UX research through democratisation
As User Experience Research (UXR) matures within a company, the demand for research insights increases. Consequently, researchers are under pressure to conduct more research at a faster pace, while still maintaining the quality of their craft. Engaging “non-researchers” can be beneficial in this effort. During this presentation, Navdeep will discuss the rationale for scaling UX research, explore 'responsible' democratisation and provide practical strategies for getting started (re-evaluating) with your own UXR democratisation efforts.

LIGHTNING TALKS (~7 mins)
Rosie Lidington, Lead UX Researcher, Contractor
Learning from the methods of teaching to have impact on stakeholders with User Research
Rosie will take us on a whistle stop journey of discovery into the mental models of founders. From a series of interviews and experience working directly with them, she uncovered insight that showed teaching methods to be a good way to tackle stakeholder engagement with user research findings.

Rosie has been working in user research and UX design since 2008, working with teams and stakeholders of varying size, across different industries.

Lin Min-Jung, Product Designer, Ambassador Theatre Group
Balancing Quantity with Quality in Scaling User Research
Scaling user research is a balancing act between gathering more data and keeping insights actionable. Min-Jung will share strategies from her work in live performance venues, focusing on maintaining research quality in fast-paced environments, and how to ensure cross-team collaboration leads to impactful outcomes.

Min-Jung is a Product Designer at ATG Entertainment, specializing in venue operations, online ticketing, and live performance production. She has worked in industries like live entertainment, education, non-profits, sports betting, and fintech across Australia and the UK, delivering scalable, user-centered solutions.
