Capacity Builder: Intro to Participatory Event Design

Frustrated by lackluster meetings and events? Does your group seem to be spinning its wheels, perhaps with most of the work being done by just a couple of members? Concerned that members of your community are not getting their voices heard or, alternatively, that some voices seem to dominate conversations or discourse? Are you interested in embracing the wisdom of groups and leveraging that power to create quality outcomes drawn from the passions and talents of all participants?

The time of centralized, top-down and hierarchical decision-making is giving way to a new reality based on participatory design. After sharing a potluck supper, Rachel Lyn Rumson will lead the group through a survey of practical, accessible strategies for participatory events.

You will learn about and compare/contrast such approaches as: Framing events based on well-formed questions Open Space Technology Art of Hosting World Cafe Circles and, ultimately, cultivating leadership from within groups based on passion and talents These strategies can apply to everything from meetings and forums to business events and family dinners!

She brings her energetic presence and passion for process work and design to our mission. Her specialty is participatory structures for self-organizing systems serving ad hoc coalition groups and organizations in transition.

She is also a process consultant and educator. With more than ten years of facilitation and training experience, Rachel Lyn values learning processes and dialogue as vital design elements in social permaculture. She has been called an animator due to the “life” that she brings to groups, actively engaging them in the work. Her masters thesis on regenerative systems combined with her study of Permaculture Design form a keystone of her practice.
