Do you dread the moment when you are networking and hear the question, “What do you do?” Have you experienced feeling deflated as you approach writing your resume and need to hedge about perceived career deficits? Are you apprehensive about avoiding the pause of a few beats after an interviewer asks tough questions? In this workshop we will demonstrate ways to neutralize or flip negatives into positives. We will discuss problematic issues that surface frequently. First, experience: none at all, none that is relevant, or experience related to the job you want goes way back in time. Other issues include lack of focus about a career path; changing your career trajectory and over-relying on transferable skills; updating a skillset; moving away from a job category that is now obsolete; confronting ageism bias and being rejected because of overqualification; accommodations needed for a disability; and presenting experience gained by working in another country. We will discuss workable approaches that overwhelm perceived deficits with positives: These may include your knowledge of an industry and complex processes as well as understanding needs of customers, undertaking activities to prepare for the new role, equipping yourself with new skills, and demonstrating effectiveness in solving problems and meeting complex challenges, plus volunteering, showing commitment and motivations, strengthening your soft skills, and demonstrating positive attributes and traits. We will adapt our discussion to the priorities and interests of participants. Please bring your questions, ideas, and tips to share with others.
Let's inspire and strengthen each other with our insights. The themes that drive resume effectiveness include showing your strengths, emphasizing problems you can solve, and highlighting your potential to add value. You will learn to include challenges you have met and accomplishments that have achieved goals. Attendees typically raise questions about handling work gaps and transitioning to a new industry, new level, new job function, new degree/certification, and more.
