Scanners - the Canadian Sci-Fi Horror by David Cronenberg

This Canadian B-Movie from 1981 was a breakout film for the Canadian film industry despite lukewarm critical reception at the time, and was both a commercial success at the time while remaining a long-time cult classic. The story revolves around a small number of people that have telepathic powers that allow them to read other peoples minds as well as influence their behaviour, and carry out telekinetic actions. A violent film with graphic special effects, Scanners has very strong line-up of actors, particularly Michael Ironside, Patrick McGoohan and Jennifer O'Neill. It is a fast moving story which foreshadows many sci-fi plot ideas and concepts familiar in present day science fiction, the parallels which we can talk about during the event.
