Get Carter (1971) - film discussion
Details
Adapted from a novel (Jack's Return Home) by Ted Lewis, this is a gritty revenge thriller and gangster pic directed by Mike Hodges and starring Michael Caine which propelled him into mega stardom. It follows the main protagonist (Jack Carter) as he returns to his hometown of Newcastle following his brother's (Frank) demise at the apparent hands of the Newcastle Mob (aptly led by Roy Kinnear played by famous playwright John Osbourne) all under the watchful eye of his London Mob Bosses (the Fletcher Brothers).
Noted for its gritty realism and grim depiction of the 'North' (note that the novel was actually set in a town called Grimsby) it was seen by critics as as befitting end to the sugar coated sixties.
The film also spawned two prequel novels by Ted Lewis (Jack Carter's Law and Jack's Mafia Pigeon) along with a remake/reboot
starring Sylvester Stallone which notably featured Michael Caine in the role of Cliff Bromby (originally played by Brian Mosely - AKA Alf Roberts in Coronation Street).
