Batman (1989)

A modern era superhero movie that moved the beloved character from the comics and slapstick TV show to the big screen. Helmed by Tim Burton and directed with his unique style, and featuring and epic stand off between Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne and Jack Nicholson's Joker, the film manages to squeeze in a back story for both before letting their duel commence against the dark backdrop of Gotham City.
