Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival: Latin Double Bill – Aruán Ortiz and Manuel Valera. Aruán Ortiz’s amazing work is an instrumental re-interpretation of concepts and motifs inspired from iconic architectural works. These extraordinary artists push their creativity beyond sonic limits as they musically explore masterpieces like Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia replete with its arabesque spires and presence of alchemy.
Manuel Valera and The New Cuban Express, Jose Marti en Nueva York Featuring vocalist, Sofia Re
The New Cuban Express sextet interprets the poems of Jose Marti’s Versos Sencillos, written in New York in the late 1800s by this Cuban national hero, revolutionary philosopher and poet. Through contemporary jazz and Afro-Cuban music, the arrangements interweave contemporary post bop harmony, ancient percussion of the African batá drums, chamber music-like sections, chants, call-and-response techniques originating in Africa.
