R Govys: Accessing and Mapping American Community Survey Data in R

The American Community Survey (ACS) provides detailed data on communities across the United States, and R provides a flexible, reproducible way to work with these data and create geographic visualizations. This session will demonstrate a practical workflow for accessing and mapping ACS data in R. Using tidycensus and related R packages, we will explore how to identify ACS variables, retrieve the desired data directly from the Census API, obtain the corresponding geographic boundaries, and combine and prepare the resulting data for mapping. Using this workflow, participants will see how to create meaningful maps with common visualization packages such as ggplot2 and plotly. Participants will leave with a reproducible workflow they can adapt for their own analyses, along with practical examples of how R can be used to move from ACS data retrieval to geographic visualization.
