Debate: Free states should secede from the United States

Details

The United States Supreme Court rejected a lawsuit from Texas and others states alleging electoral fraud in the recent president election of Joe Biden over Donald Trump. Texas state Representative Kyle Biedermann, a Republican of Fredericksburg, announced his intention to introduce the Texas Independence Referendum Act, which he said would allow Texans to vote for the state to "reassert its status as an independent nation." Other politicians and citizens in states that supported that lawsuit are also calling for their states to secede from the United States. And still others are predicting an eventual political divorce over the issues that currently divide the nation.

Should states who supported Donald Trump secede from the United States? Have political divisions reached a point where a peaceful separation is the best option? Or did Joe Biden steal the election fair and square?

Pro
The United States was founded as a federation of states. But over the last couple hundred years the federal government has grown in power at the expense of the states, communities, and individuals. The situation is now beyond repair.

Federal institutions are now being used to attack the culture, legal rights, and lifestyles. Although the political parties may trade time in office and nominal control of the federal government, the actual situation is that there is a permanently entrenched deep state that cannot be changed by elections and which "resists" Republican administrations while enthusiastically supporting those of the Democrats.

It is time to abandon the American experiment and for free states to explore a peaceful transition to a looser political arrangement much as Britain is now separating itself from the Economic Union.

Con
Talk of secession is crazy if not seditious. There is no deep state, no conspiracy against Republican rule. The fact is that the Republican establishment was almost as opposed to the Trump administration as were the Democrats and are almost as glad to be rid of him. There may always be a fringe of Americans calling for strive and division but President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will reunify the nation and bring us together once again in the pursuit of the general welfare.
