***Parking Lot (Google Maps): By Arcadia Check Station - Wood River Arcadia Management Area, 2224 Ten Rod Rd, Exeter, RI 02822

This 6.4-mile loop trail near Rockville, Rhode Island is generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 27 min to complete. This is a very popular area, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring.

Begin near the Wood River at a parking area just off Ten Rod Road. The trail is flat for about the first mile before you begin to climb up toward a viewpoint.

Some sections are not well marked, so downloading the AllTrails map ahead of time is recommended. There are some road crossings involved, so use caution in those areas.

Highlights include beautiful scenery and varied terrain. Challenges are mud, slippery spots, and some unmarked areas.

On Hike Do's:

  1. Do read the Waiver and Release of Liability Terms in the section below.
  • Do post your picture on your Meetup profile to help your organizer get organized.
  • Do show up dressed, ready and on-time, to begin our journey.
  • Do stay with your group: Emphasize the importance of sticking together and not wandering off.
  • Do use the buddy system: Ensure everyone has a partner to look out for each other.
  • Do stay put if you get lost: Unless there is immediate danger, it's safer to stay put if you become separated from the group.
  • Do check the weather forecast before you go: Northeast weather can change rapidly.
  • Do dress in layers: This helps you adjust to changing temperatures.
  • Do carry essential gear: This includes a map, compass or GPS, sufficient water and snacks, a first-aid kit, a headlamp, and layers for warmth.
  • Do inform someone of your hiking plans: Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
  • Do be aware of hunting seasons: If you go hiking during hunting season, wear bright orange clothing for visibility (October to February in RI).
  • Do research the trail beforehand: Understand the difficulty level, length, and terrain of the trail you plan to hike.
  1. Do look at what the folks at REI think you should do to prepare and enjoy a hike at: https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/day-hiking-checklist.html?msockid=353d7859916a6b1105f86da890be6a9a

On Hike Don'ts:

  • Don't hike alone, especially as a beginner: Hiking with a group provides support and safety in case of emergencies.
  • Don't attempt a trail that is beyond your fitness level: Start with easier trails and gradually increase the difficulty as you gain experience.
  • Don't leave trash behind: Practice Leave No Trace principles to protect the environment.
  • Don't disturb wildlife: Observe animals from a distance and never feed them.
  • Don't underestimate the power of nature: Be aware of potential hazards like changing weather, difficult terrain, and wildlife encounters.
