Contemporary Woman Hating: Dying Gasp or the New Normal?
Details
Is the current resurgence of woman hating that is rampant throughout the Trump administration, as well as the rest of society, the dying gasp of historical patriarchy, or is it a particularly virulent backlash that will succeed in setting women back from the few gains we have made? Are you pessimistic or optimistic about what the future holds for women at this point?
Based on your assessment of which of the above scenarios best applies, what are the best strategies to deal with what is happening?
Why do polls show that young men are much more, rather than less, sexist than older men? What are the factors that influence this: the proliferation of pornography on the internet? Christian nationalism and the homeschooling of young people? Changes in the education system? Something else?
The speech on woman hating by Andrea Dworkin in the linked video is interesting, both in terms of what Dworkin said (which has been ignored/erased since that time), but also in terms of thinking about whether there have been significant changes to the condition of women under patriarchy since the time she gave this speech. Please watch it if you can in preparation for our next discussion.
