Upper Mattaponi Annual Pow Wow

We are so fortunate to have Native American tribes close to Richmond. The Upper Mattaponi Tribe holds their annual Pow Wow on their reservation Saturday May 24th. It opens at 10am and the grand entry happens at 12 noon. There are many different dances performed with different styles, men and women, and age groups. They will celebrate veterans and give honor to the elders. All will be wearing native tribal regalia. The more contemporary regalia is quite beautiful and colorful. The traditional regalia is made of animal skins and natural adornments. It's a wonderful opportunity for photography. Photographing the dancing is always fine, however it's best to ask before photographing individuals. They have always been cordial about photos when asked. The event is free this year, but they are taking donations. I will be arriving at around 11am. It's best to arrive early to find a good vantage point. Hope you can come out!
