A Weekday Trip to Derby Creek Beach

Details

note: we should have enough parking at my house for the people who will come to the beach today, but in the very unlikely event that you get to my house and all the parking is gone, park at the Beverly Shores train station, walk down Broadway to Lake Front dr, turn left again, and walk to the dip in the road till you see my blue golf cart parked, then come down to the beach on the path marked "Open Trail" at the west end of that mini-lot, and look for us on the shore, probably to the right. i will we wearing a faded blue hat that says "GREECE" on it.

if you arrive late, park in the spaces mentioned below only; then walk back to Broadway, and turn left; walk down to Lake Front dr, turn left again, and walk to the dip in the road till you see my blue golf cart parked, then come down to the beach on the trail at the west end of that mini-lot, and look for us on the shore. i will be wearing a faded blue hat that says "GREECE" on it.

dear friends--

we have had two pleasant beach days at Derby Creek Beach so far this year...let's try for another, this time on a weekday.

our special guest today, will be Jodi, visiting from Florida, who was active in the group in the early teens, before she left the area and moved south.

be sure to check the weather beforehand, and dress appropriately. http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Beverly+Shores+IN+46301 , which, i hope, will be a swimsuit and flip-flops so you can go in the water, which is now touching 80 F! it could be rocky entering the Lake, so you might want to bring water shoes.

bring along some food which we will eat at the beach, plus enough water (one quart minimum), a hat with a brim, sunscreen, etc.

about a quarter mile to the east, at Lakeview Beach, there are modern restrooms and drinking water, but bring your own water with, because it is a bit of a hike.

once at the beach, we will assess the temperature, sun conditions, and the inclinations of the group to decide who just wants to hang out on the beach, and who might want to walk west down the shore, into the state park, and beyond.

afterwards, depending on the mood of the group, we may go to beautiful downtown Beverly Shores for a late lunch at The Goblin and the Grocer.

hope to see you there,

Rick

directions & parking instructions:

avoid the intersection of IN 49 & US 12 because of summer traffic jams; take IN 49 north to US 20; go east; turn left on CR 300 E (Kemil rd), then right on US 12, then left onto Broadway (traffic light opposite National Park campground); continue about 3/4 mile, and turn left at Marne, go to 11 w Marne--a gray, three story house set back rather far from the road; street parking is not allowed in Beverly Shores, but you can park in the off-street spaces across the road from us, and in front of the house to the east of us (towards Broadway); pull straight into the spaces and park as close together as you safely can; DO NOT block anyone in, or block any driveways!

do not park in my driveway unless i tell you to. do not block anyone's driveway.

once you have parked, come to my front porch and take one of the parking permits there. put it in your car window facing the road.

if all spaces are taken, call me at 773-415-0428.

we will wait till 11:30, then depart for the beach. i will drive our trusty golf cart, Bluesheen, down to the beach with people's gear, since i have a Beverly Shores parking permit, and the rest of you will go there on foot, on some pleasant Beverly Shores streets, and a wooded path.

i can take 1-3 passengers by golf cart if anyone wants or needs a ride, but travel at your own risk, no seat belts--this is a golf cart.
