About us

What actually happens at an Estuary?

An Estuary is a two-hour conversation, but not just any conversation. We especially welcome people from different ideological backgrounds, different religions, different political persuasions, and different perspectives on current events. We appreciate intellectual diversity, intellectual honesty, and free expression.

Our goal is to listen and learn, and perhaps even learn to love.

How does it work?

  • We use a structured protocol that encourages mutual respect and openness to new ideas
  • There is no pre-determined agenda and nobody comes with a prepared lesson
  • Each participant proposes a topic and the group votes on which topics to discuss
  • Every session is unique

Who is it for?

  • People longing for authentic friendships;
  • Seekers of truth, meaning, and understanding;
  • Secular, spiritual, and religious;
  • All humans willing to listen and speak with respect

What kinds of topics?

  • Intellectual – a book, podcast, article, or film that provoked thought
  • Cultural/Contextual – world events, local news, political issues
  • Personal – a life change, personal situation, or challenge
  • Estuarial – comments about the group itself or the protocol

No topic is off limits. We tackle the big questions of life – morality, meaning, current events, relationships, and more. No one should feel pressured to contribute; you can always pass and just observe.
