Enchastraye Peak Hike - Early October Adventure
Details
Hi there, a bit late to annouce a hike for the weekend but weather forecast couldn't make up its mind during the week. However, now the forecast is very good and if you haven't yet planned something for tomorrow, I have a lovely autumn hike in the high mountains for you.
Location: Mercantour National Park, France (bordering Alpes-Maritimes, Ubaye, and Stura valleys)
Difficulty: Two options available - more sportive peak ascent or easier pass visit
Getting There: Accessible from the Bonette road via the former Fourches military camp
Description: This versatile hike takes you to the impressive peak of Enchastraye, a mountain that perfectly embodies the region's rich pastoral heritage. The name "Enchastraye" derives from Provençal meaning "fenced area," reflecting centuries of sheep farming in the surrounding valleys - including Salse Morène, Lauzanier, and Pouriac (Italy) - where thousands of sheep graze from July through October.
The Options:
Option 1: Only to Pouriac pass
A more relaxed approach that takes you to the Pouriac pass, perfect for an extended lunch break in this scenic alpine setting. This significantly shorter route allows for a leisurely meal while enjoying the peaceful pastoral atmosphere. The Salso Morreno valley is easy to hike.
Elevation gain: 600m
Option 2: All the way up to Enchastraye Peak
A significant hike requiring good fitness and ease in alpine terrain rewarded by spectacular panoramic views across the Oisans, Chambeyron, and Argentera mountain ranges.
Elevation gain: 1100m
Both routes offer: A chance to witness the ongoing traditional Alpine pastoral life where you'll see thousands of sheep grazing in the high pastures from July through October, and experience the tranquility of these mountain communities' centuries-old farming practices. Also there are usually ibex up there.
Option 1 is simply an extension of option 2, both are back and forth on the same track.
Recommended for: Hikers seeking either a challenging adventure or a peaceful, scenic lunch break in stunning Alpine surroundings. Pace: relaxed social hiking, with a sportive extension for those that want to go up to Enchastraye.
Starting point: Camp des fourches https://maps.app.goo.gl/X5qUzY916ePJuP166
